SACRED VALLEY

The Sacred Valley is between the towns of Pisac and Ollantaytambo.

It was highly appreciated by the Incas for its excellent climate, the fertile lands and the waters of the sacred river of the Incas, the Vilcanota (in Quechua, something sacred or wonderful), which upriver, in the city of Urubamba, is renamed as a river Urubamba.

The Sacred Valley has wonderful Andean landscapes and some of its inhabitants still preserve many ancestral traditions and rites. In this place, travelers can appreciate the technological development achieved by the Incas in agriculture through the cultivation terraces.

It was one of the main production sites in Cusco, due to the richness of the land, and because it produces the best corn in Peru. Therefore, the Valley is one of the cult centers of the Pachamama (Mother Earth).

It can be accessed from the city of Cusco by road or rail.
